Wing Field Day 2011

With temperatures reaching 29 degrees Wing Field Day was a sweltering one this year. 15 Cadets from 480 Squadron attended Warwickshire and Birmingham’s annual Field Day to compete in Drill, First Aid and Aircraft Recognition. Unfortunately our Netball, Football and Shooting teams were knocked out in the preliminary rounds and didn’t make it to Finals Day.

We arrived at Bramcote for 9am and it was a long day. As we were only involved in 3 events we had a lot of free time. This was a bonus for the cadets as it allowed them to visit the RAF Careers stand and the DCCT Range.

Even though the excessive heat reduced the Drill team, lead by Cpl Jacob Edwards, to 11 cadets they still marched on and completed the Drill sequence. However, they were unable to get anywhere near last years 6thplace. When asked, Warrant Officer Tim Lloyd, the squadrons Drill Instructor said ‘It has been difficult to get the team together for training due to exams and bad weather. This is no excuse for our poor performance but we WILL do better next year’.

All 26 Squadrons went on to do the Final Parade which lasted an hour due to results, awards and speeches being given. Some cadets had to be removed from the parade early due to the heat, yet as you would expect, the Parade still went on.

After the March past we were dismissed and made our way home thoroughly exhausted.

Well done 480 for all your efforts. ‘NEXT YEAR...’
