Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing Five A Side Football and Netball Competition 2011

Air Cadets from the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing recently competed in a 5-a-side football and netball competitions at Stockland Green Leisure Centre, Erdington, in an effort to take the Wing Trophy.

A team from 480 (Studley) Squadron participated in both the junior 5-a-side football and the open age netball competitions.

The first round of football, against 487 Detached Flight, led to a successful, if hard fought, 3-1 win. This, combined with their 9-0 victory against 495 Squadron in the second round, meant that confidence was high as they went into the quarter final match against 1368 Squadron. Unfortunately 1368 Squadron hadn’t read the script and were soon 3-0 up, leaving our boys reeling. In the second half we fought back with 2 goals but ran out of time, losing the match 3-2. Team Captain, Corporal Tom Allum, commented “We may not have won the Wing trophy but we are pleased we got through to the quarter finals. We worked well as a team and enjoyed the competition”.

Under the Captaincy of Corporal Jess Orme, our six girls put up a valiant effort in the second round netball match against a very physical and experienced 487 Detached Flight but went down fighting losing by just a single goal.

The whole Squadron should be proud of the way both teams represented 480, for the way they handled themselves and the 100% effort they put in regardless of their skill levels.

Well done 480!
