The brief history of the squadron

480 Squadron was formed on 21st February 1941 and was known as 480 (Austin) Squadron. The Squadron was based at the Austin Motor Company in Longbridge, Birmingham. On 3rd May 1944, 480 Squadron was disbanded and amalgamated with 479 (Northfield) Squadron. The squadron was later reformed in 1974 as 479 (Studley) Detached Flight. The squadron was based at Pool Road in Studley, Warwickshire. On 1st February 1977 the squadron regained its original number and changed its name to 480 (Studley) Squadron. In September 1991, the squadron was again relocated, this time only over to the other side of the car park in Pool Road.

Since the squadron was formed, we have had many Commanding Officers that have given up their own time to run the squadron and help cadets through their time at the squadron. A list of all the CO's at the squadron is below.

The Civilian Committee

As well as the officers and cadets, no squadron is complete without a Civilian Committee. The Civilian Committee look after the Squadron's finances and the general welfare of the Squadron.

The committee is also there to help with fundraising, recruitment, the maintenance of the squadron's property and support on various squadron activites. It should consist of 6 or more people and fulfil the roles of chair person, treasurer and secretary. Our committee is made up from cadets parents, ex-squadron members, prominent members of the community and anyone with a genuine interest in the squadron and the air training corps. The Officer Commanding also sits on the committee as a link to the uniformed side of the squadron.

We meet once a month and are always looking for new members, so if you are interested in joining us, please come down and visit us at the squadron and speak to our members of staff for more information. You can also contact us via the web form here.
